How to Get Rid of Hiccups

5. Sensory Distractions

In addition to flavors, sensory distractions are another useful remedy for hiccups. The first sensory distraction you could try is to have someone ask you a bunch of questions. This gets your brain thinking about the questions at hand, which in turn relaxes your abdomen and diaphragm. You could also try massaging the pressure points on your hands. Massaging helps your body to refocus its attention from your lungs and stomach to your hands and feet. You could also try rubbing the back of your neck or have a buddy do it for an extra treat. This will stimulate the phrenic nerve (which passes down the lungs to the diaphragm).
